Pennsylvania's budget includes its first dedicated state funding for 988
Pennsylvania's 2026–27 budget sets aside $10 million for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and $5 million to keep walk-in behavioral health crisis centers open. The state says the money will keep all 14 of its 988 call centers staffed around the clock and raise the number of centers that answer texts and chats from three to six. You can call, text or chat 988 at any time, for free.

Second large psilocybin trial for hard-to-treat depression meets its main goal
Compass Pathways reported that its second phase 3 trial of COMP360, a synthetic form of psilocybin given with psychological support, reduced depression scores more than a very low dose for people with treatment-resistant depression. In April 2026 the FDA agreed to a rolling review of the company's application and gave it a priority voucher that can shorten review time. Psilocybin is not FDA-approved: it is available only in clinical trials, and these results come from the company and are not yet fully published.

Major review finds exercise helps depression about as much as talk therapy
An updated Cochrane review of 73 trials found that exercise may reduce depression symptoms, and probably works about as well as psychological therapy. The comparison with antidepressants is less certain, and there is little evidence on whether the benefit lasts. Exercise can be part of your care, but it is not a reason to stop treatment that is helping you.

FDA approves a second at-home brain stimulation device for depression
The FDA approved the Proliv Rx System, a prescription device that gently stimulates nerves at the forehead and back of the head, for use at home or in a clinic. It is approved as an add-on for adults with depression who did not improve enough on at least one antidepressant. It needs a prescription, and insurance coverage may be limited while it is new.

FDA approves first at-home brain stimulation headset for depression
The FDA approved Flow FL-100, a prescription headset that sends a weak electrical current to the front of the brain (tDCS). It is for adults with moderate to severe depression, on its own or alongside medication, but not for people whose depression has not responded to several medications. The company launched it in the US in September 2026. Skin redness was a common side effect, and insurance coverage is still uncertain.

Caplyta approved as an add-on medicine for depression
The FDA approved Caplyta (lumateperone) for adults with major depression, taken together with an antidepressant. In two six-week trials, people who added it improved more than people who added a placebo. Common side effects include sleepiness, dizziness and nausea, and like similar medicines it carries boxed warnings, so ask your prescriber whether it fits your situation.

Illinois and Nevada limit AI chatbots that act as therapists
Illinois passed a law that bars AI from giving therapy or making treatment decisions on its own; licensed clinicians may still use it for tasks like scheduling and notes. Nevada passed a similar law in June 2025. AI apps can be a support, but they are not a substitute for a licensed professional, and in a crisis you should call or text 988.

988 ends its separate option for LGBTQ+ young people
The federal 988 Lifeline stopped offering its 'Press 3' option, which connected LGBTQ+ people under 25 with specially trained counselors. Anyone can still call, text or chat 988 and reach a crisis counselor, and the veterans and Spanish-language options continue. The Trevor Project still runs its own 24/7 support for LGBTQ+ young people.

Large review looks at what happens when people stop antidepressants
A review of 50 trials with about 17,800 people found that, on average, stopping an antidepressant led to about one extra symptom in the first week, most often dizziness, nausea or nervousness. Most trials followed people for only a short time, and some people do have stronger or longer withdrawal symptoms, so experts disagree about how to read it. Don't stop suddenly: plan any change with your prescriber.

Spravato nasal spray approved for use without a daily antidepressant
The FDA approved Spravato (esketamine) nasal spray to be used on its own for adults whose depression has not improved after at least two antidepressants. Before this, it had to be taken with an oral antidepressant. It is still given only at certified clinics, where you are watched for at least two hours after each dose and cannot drive that day.

Medicare begins paying for prescribed digital mental health apps
Starting in 2025, Medicare pays clinicians for FDA-cleared digital mental health treatment devices, such as prescription therapy apps, when they are used as part of ongoing care with that clinician. It does not cover general wellness apps, and the app has to be used alongside your treatment, not on its own. Ask your clinician whether a cleared app fits your plan.
News isn't advice about your own care. Talk with your clinician before changing a treatment.
